fall squashWith yellow aspen trees brightening up the mountainsides, October is the perfect time to be in Aspen and Snowmass to view the fall colors, go on a hike, and attend local events. Though October's calendar is much quieter than that of the summer's, there are a couple of local events scheduled in October that cannot be missed. This month's Aspen and Snowmass events include the ACES Annual Harvest Party and the Aspen Art Museum's Roaring Fork Open 2013. Celebrate a bountiful harvest and meet the local community at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies' Annual Harvest Party at Rock Bottom Ranch. The Harvest Party will be held on Saturday, October 19 from noon – 5:00 pm at Rock Bottom Ranch, which is located along the Rio Grande Trail, just past the Willits neighborhood in Basalt and El Jebel. Harvest party-goers can enjoy a delicious lunch from Smoke Modern BBQ, a popular restaurant located in Willits. After enjoying a tasty meal with friends and family, dance to the lively tunes of the Out of Bounds String Band, take a ranch tour, play ranch games, bid in the silent auction, carve a pumpkin, and press apples for apple cider. Harvest Party tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids 10 and under if purchased in advance. Tickets purchased on the day of the event are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 10 and under. Children 2 and under have free admission. Also, the Harvest Party is a car free event. ACES recommends walking or biking to the ranch via the Rio Grande Trail. There will also be shuttles running every 15 minutes from the Basalt and El Jebel park and rides. The Aspen Art Museum's current exhibition is the Roaring Fork Open 2013, which showcases artwork from  125 artists who live in the Roaring Fork Valley. The exhibition features all types of art media from paintings and photography to sculpture and digital media. As such, the Roaring Fork Open 2013 displays the breadth and diversity of artwork being created by local artists. Explore the Roaring Fork Valley art scene at the Aspen Art Museum. The Roaring Fork Open 2013 runs through October 27. There is more to Aspen and Snowmass in the fall than taking in the beautiful fall foliage while enjoying a hike. Though fall hiking in Aspen is an incredibly fun outdoor activity, there are still local events planned for the month of October that are well worth attending.
