Aspen & Snowmass Closing Day 2014

Activities, Events, Ski Snowmass

Aspen Snowmass Closing Day 2014It is a beautiful spring season here in the Rockies! With plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures, the spring skiing and riding season is in full swing. With frequent spring snowstorms, skiing and riding conditions could not be better. With a week (and a couple of weekends) remaining in the ski season, the warming temperatures and sunshine have everyone looking ahead to the closing day celebrations in Aspen and Snowmass.

Closing day on each of the local ski mountains is not so much about skiing and riding, but more about celebrating the close of another great season on the mountain. For this reason, many shed their GORE-TEX and down for more festive apparel. The parade of costumes on the mountain is something that cannot be missed. In the past several years, vintage eighties ski apparel has made a comeback, as evidenced by the ever-popular neon onesie ski suits. Also, there are often a handful of skiers and riders donning a variety of animal costumes, or decked out in campy, glamorous outfits comprised of glittery spandex and fur ski coats and hats. Whether participating in the costume parade, or enjoying the hilarity of it all, this part of closing day is fun for everyone. During closing day this year on Snowmass Mountain, check out the Schneetag event on Spider Sabich at the top of the Burlingame lift. The competition involves teams of four, a 75' x 20' pond, and a homemade watercraft designed to glide over the pond's surface. Each of the teams designs their craft and costumes on a theme, whether that be a rock band, silver miners, a video game, or the like. Some crafts are well-built, and travel part way across the pond before coming to a slow halt, and ultimately sinking. Then, there are those other crafts that completely fall apart on the descent to the pond, and never even hit the water. Though, watching as some crafts succeed and others fail is all part of the Schneetag fun. Make sure to swing by the Schneetag antics any time between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm on Snowmass Mountain closing day on Sunday, April 20. Closing day for the other three mountains is as follows: Buttermilk Mountain, closed on Sunday, April 6 Aspen Highlands Mountain closing day on Sunday, April 13 Aspen Mountain closing day on Sunday, April 20 (open for two bonus weekends on April 26 - 27 and May 3 - 4) The team at Alpine Property is looking forward to closing out the season in style on all the local ski mountains, and we hope to see you on the slopes this spring.
