If you’re looking for the perfect Rocky Mountain Christmas, be sure to put the Aspen Snowmass on your list. As soon as you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a winter wonderland with sparkling lights, wreaths, garlands, and festive holiday decorations adorning downtown.
Since specific dates and times can change from year to year, be sure to visit the websites of local businesses (or just ask our Concierge) before confirming your plans.
Annual Christmas Tree Lightings
If you arrive in Aspen for a long Christmas break, you may be in time for one of the several annual Christmas Tree lightings downtown. Aspen’s Sardy House on Main Street lights up during the first weekend of December, and the Little Nell usually lights its courtyard tree around that time, as well. The St. Regis includes a “Champagne sabering” signature ceremony when its 30-foot courtyard tree lights up.
Letters to Santa for the Littles
Santa will be leaving a mailbox in the front yard at the Sardy House December 3–12, so everyone can send their Christmas lists to Santa via the “Letters to Santa” box. You may even be in time for the annual Sardy House Tree Lighting!

Whether you’re choosing an early Christmas lunch or an evening Christmas dinner, you’ll find the perfect dining choice for everyone in your party. Christmas Skiing in Aspen Snowmass
There’s nothing that adds to a memorable Christmas vacation like the brilliant skiing conditions at Aspen Snowmass. With four mountains to choose from (and every pass includes them all!), you’ll experience prime ski slopes with enjoyable features. You’ll never get bored. Explore currently available tickets and passes on the SkiCo website.
Catch a Christmas Show
Each year, Theatre Aspen produces a Winter Cabaret holiday-themed show. Based on a holiday theme, the cabaret series includes four shows at four separate Aspen locations. Director and choreographer Abbey O’Brien aims to celebrate the beauty of the holiday season in Aspen. In 2020, you’ll be able to watch a complimentary curated virtual Theatre Aspen Cabaret Series celebrating the Broadway experience, streaming live from New York City.
Art for the Holidays
Launching in time for Christmas 2020, the Aspen Art Museum presents “Winterfest: An Exhibition of Arts and Crafts.” This new exhibition (with all works for sale!) will be an annual holiday affair. AAM’s Winterfest has been inspired by the German tradition of jahresgaben — annual selling exhibitions by member-based art associations throughout Germany with the intention of supporting artists financially. The exhibit has been designed by German (though US-based) artist Veit Laurent Kurz, and configured to represent a cabin, mountains, and a lake.
Celebrate Solstice with a Bonfire
ACES (the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies) invites those in town for Christmas to celebrate the winter solstice (a few days before Christmas) around a warm fire at Hallam Lake. Bring your own mug to the nature preserve for complimentary hot cocoa, and enjoy nature-based photography and themed ice sculptures amidst the quiet and serenity of Hallam Lake during a Solstice evening in the winter.
Join in the 12 Days of Aspen
Each year, the Aspen Chamber (ACRA) curates a continually-updated list of that season’s holiday activities. While exact details change annually, you’ll be able to accommodate your own holiday schedule while choosing events the whole family will enjoy. From caroling performances to cookie and gingerbread decorating to story hours and more, you’ll find the Chamber’s updated Christmas resource invaluable, no matter the year.
