Fun in the Air

Participate in a Snowmass Village tradition, now in its 40th year―the Snowmass Balloon Festival. This annual event is a blast for everyone, from the hot air balloon pilots to the children gazing open-mouthed at the hot air balloons taking their shape on the ground, and then, lifting off into the blue skies.

On Friday, September 18, don’t miss the Carter Memorial Colorado Rat Race, a hot air balloon competition that involves 30 hot air balloons on a race course that spans the entire length of the Roaring Fork Valley!

Then, on Saturday, September 19, head to Fanny Hill for the Saturday Evening Glow Show. The hot air balloon pilots put on a fun, synchronized “glow show” using their balloon burners. The Glow Show will be from 7:45 – 9:00 pm.

Check out the hot air balloons at the Snowmass Balloon Festival from September 18 – 20, 2015.

At the annual Snowmass Wine Festival, attendees can mix and mingle with fellow wine connoisseurs; and for anyone wanting to learn more about how to select reds and whites for an upcoming dinner party, this mountain wine fest is the place to acquire some basic sommelier skills.

The fun beings on Friday, September 18 with the Wine Dinner at the Viceroy Snowmass Hotel. This year’s four-course feast will explore New Zealand wineries. Tickets are $135 each.

On Saturday, September 19, the Grand Tasting will be held at the Snowmass Town Park from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Walk around the Tasting grounds from vintner booth to vintner booth, and discover a new favorite vintage or two.

Tickets for the Grand Tasting are $95 at the door.

The Roaring Fork Watershed: A Fly Fishing Paradise

Colorado’s Roaring Fork River is aptly named, as the sound of rushing water is ever present along its beautiful 70 mile descent from the crest of the Rocky Mountains to it’s confluence with the Colorado River.  As the water tumbles down it’s course, the many rapids inject oxygen into the cool water, creating the perfect conditions for trout and the many aquatic insects they ingest.  Such conditions combined with beautiful settings and a course that runs directly through Aspen makes the Roaring Fork a fly fisherman’s paradise.

aspen fly fishing 81611Beyond the main stem of the Fork, the overall watershed offers many other exciting fishing activities to the avid angler.  The world famous Frying Pan River and the more mysterious and less crowded Crystal River are the two largest tributaries to the Fork and both provide excellent angling opportunities.  With many other smaller tributaries and various high alpine lakes in the Aspen area, there are abundant opportunities for the exploring angler to get away from it all.aspen fly fishing 81611

Finding these spots and the best areas of the Fork can be an exciting challenge, but it is recommended to hire a local guide if one is a beginning angler or is only in the area for a short time.  Aspen Outfitting (aspenoutfitting.com) is a long time Aspen based outfitting business that offers wade trips to both public and private waters on the fork in the Aspen area.  Taylor Creek Fly Shop (taylorcreek.com) is also a long time area expert Based in Basalt that specializes in float trips on the lower section of the Fork and wade trips on the Frying Pan.aspen fly fishing 81611
