Beginner-Friendly Fourteeners

Mount Elbert

  • Colorado’s highest peak at 14,440 ft
  • Just over an hour from Aspen via scenic Independence Pass
  • Trail Type: Class 1 (well-marked, no scrambling)
  • Hike Stats: ~9 miles round trip, ~4,700 ft gain

Despite its elevation, Mount Elbert is considered one of the “easiest” fourteeners, thanks to its steady grade and established trail.

La Plata Peak

  • Elevation: 14,336 ft
  • Located near Twin Lakes, about an hour from Aspen
  • Trail Type: Class 2, with a bit more scrambling
  • Hike Stats: ~9.5 miles, ~4,500 ft gain

A quieter alternative to Elbert, La Plata offers a more rugged feel and some of the best ridgeline views in the Saguache Range.

Huron Peak

  • Elevation: 14,003 ft
  • Just under 2 hours from Aspen
  • Trail Type: Class 2
  • Hike Stats: ~6.5 miles, ~3,500 ft gain

Shorter in distance and big on scenery, Huron Peak is a fantastic choice if you’re seeking high-alpine beauty without an overly long trek.

More Challenging Fourteeners (for Experienced Hikers)

Capitol Peak

  • Elevation: 14,130 ft
  • About 45 minutes from Aspen via Capitol Creek Trailhead
  • Trail Type: Class 4 – high exposure and technical sections
  • Signature Feature: The Knife Edge: a narrow, exposed ridge

Capitol is legendary among Colorado climbers. It’s beautiful, wild, and deadly serious. Ideal only for those with solid scrambling experience and a head for heights.

Pyramid Peak

  • Elevation: 14,018 ft
  • Located close to town via the Maroon Lake Trailhead
  • Trail Type: Class 4

Steep, loose, and dramatic, Pyramid is a true mountaineering challenge set right in Aspen’s backyard.

Maroon Bells (North & South Maroon Peaks)

  • Elevation: 14,014 ft & 14,156 ft
  • Trail Type: Class 4 to 5: very technical, very risky

These iconic peaks are stunning to behold and notoriously dangerous to climb. They’re best reserved for experienced mountaineers with proper gear and preparation.

Tips for Hiking Fourteeners Safely

Start early

It’s always best to start early in the morning. Lightning and thunderstorms are very common in the afternoon, and you want to be safely off the peaks by then. Aim to summit by 11:00 a.m.

Bring the Essentials

Bring water to stay hydrated as well as easy portable snacks. Dress in layers as storms are common. GPS and a headlamp are also helpful.

Allow Time To Acclimate to the Altitude

To avoid altitude sickness, spending even a night or two in Aspen is helpful before heading to higher elevations.

Listen to Your Instincts

If you aren’t feeling well, or if the weather seems questionable, listen to your gut and turn back.

Best Time of Year To Hike Fourteeners

Prime hiking season in the high Rockies is late June through early September. Most snow has melted, and trails are typically in good condition. Be cautious of monsoon season in late July and August, however, as afternoon thunderstorms are more frequent this time of year.
