As summer fades into fall, the days become shorter and the Roaring Fork Valley comes alive with autumn color. The golden glow of the aspens (the trees for which the town is named) creates a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities and exploration.
October is an amazing time to visit Aspen and not just because of the obvious beauty that awaits. The mild temps, crisp autumn air, and quiet atmosphere help to create a truly magical experience that is unlike any other time of year. Fall in Aspen is unforgettable, and October is the peak of tranquility before ski season begins.
If you are hoping to make a day of checking out the gorgeous fall colors in the Aspen area, we’ve put together some ideas of what to do to create your ultimate day here.
Go Leaf Peeping
Leaf peeping is essential if you are planning a visit to the valley in October. While the timing of the fall foliage depends on many factors such as temperature, elevation, forest health, and summer precipitation, the leaves typically start to turn in late September. This means that as October approaches, the mountainsides are covered in that spectacular autumn tapestry.
Here are our favorite hikes and drives to check out the autumn colors:
Maroon Lake
Aspen’s iconic twin peaks, the Maroon Bells, are the state’s most photographed for a reason. Visit this area in October and view the tree-lined, snow-capped mountains lined in a frame of dazzling gold–and you can see why. Fall is also a great time to plan a visit as it’s less crowded than the popular summer months.
Castle Creek Valley
The Valley offers another fantastic opportunity to experience Aspen’s fall colors. The drive along Castle Creek Road is lined with golden aspens and provides access to several hiking trails. The area is also home to the ghost town of Ashcroft, which is beautiful for viewing fall foliage and exploring.
Independence Pass
Some of the best views of Aspen’s fall foliage are offered via Independence Pass, one of the highest paved passes in North America. Numerous pull-offs are available where visitors can stop to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Trails off the pass also provide spectacular views of the autumn colors and the rugged mountains.
Get Active Outdoors
October in Aspen is also the perfect time to experience the outdoors. The crisp autumn air and stunning fall foliage are the ideal backdrop for exploring. If you prefer checking out the stunning colors by foot or by bike, here are some great ways to experience all that fall has to offer:
Hiking
Autumn’s brisk air and vivid spectrum of colors make it a great time to head out for a hike on any of the amazing trails surrounding Aspen and Snowmass Village. If you are looking for a more difficult climb, Buckskin Pass in the Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness is a strenuous hike. The Grottos are an easier, shorter hike with breathtaking views, and a great way to hike with family or young kids.
Biking
Check out the fall colors on one of the many biking trails Aspen has to offer including mountain biking trails, road biking routes, and scenic byways. Smuggler Mountain Road is a mountain biking route with many switchbacks and an observation deck with beautiful mountain views, while Rio Grande Trail is a scenic paved trail that is popular with families.
Snowmass Bike Park offers 25 miles of purpose-built, diverse trails from beginner-friendly and flowing singletrack to adrenaline-inducing downhill. Ride through the scenic aspen groves to immerse yourself in the gorgeous autumn scenery while you enjoy one of Aspen’s best offerings.
Fly Fishing
In the fall with the winter weather looming, the rainbow and brown trout are very active on the waters of the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers. Stop by one of Aspen’s local fly fishing shops for tips on fishing these waters or hire one of the local adventure guides and customize your high-end fishing trip! Fishing in the fall is spectacular, and it is generally less crowded than fishing in the summer.
Grab a Bite
The town of Aspen continues to thrive throughout the off-season, with several restaurants, shops, and attractions open until October. Head to Meat & Cheese to share a plate, or grab a sandwich at The White House Tavern.
