Featured Summer Activity: E-Biking in Aspen Snowmass

Activities, Vacation Prep

Looking for a fun way to get around Aspen and Snowmass in the summer? Nothing beats cruising the streets with an e-bike. The advantage of the e-bike lies in the battery that enables a rider to cruise faster with less effort. E-bikes can enhance your ride while allowing you to take a more sustainable mode of transportation.

Aspen offers urban and mountain e-bike rentals for half or full days. If you are planning on renting an e-bike for your vacation, it’s a good idea to make a reservation as they have become more popular, particularly during the summer months.

Where To Ride

If you are planning on e-biking in Aspen Snowmass, it’s best to know the rules around riding e-bikes and where they are and are not allowed. In general, e-bikes aren’t allowed on singletrack mountain bike trails in or around Aspen Snowmass. They are, however, permitted on paved service roads as well as the Rio Grande rail which stretches from Aspen down the valley to Glenwood Springs.

There are plenty of routes in Aspen Snowmass open to e-bikes, and they offer unbeatable scenery as well as the opportunity to get outside and get some fresh mountain air. Here are a few of our favorite trails to explore:

Maroon Creek to the Bells

Rent an e-bike and head up Maroon Creek Rd for a long and scenic ride up to the Maroon Bells. Bike through the forest filled with incredible aspens and evergreens and experience the journey in a new way.

Rio Grande Trail to Woody Creek Tavern

Take the trail along the Roaring Fork River via the Rio Grande Trail to Woody Creek Tavern. This path was once host to the railroad tracks that were Aspen’s lifeline.

Woody Creek Tavern is popular amongst locals, tourists, and even celebrities. The landmark eatery is wallpapered with Hunter S. Thompson memorabilia and quirky photos worthy of checking out while you grab food and a drink.

Owl Creek Trail

This 5.8 mile trail connects Snowmass to Aspen. It’s also a great way to make a loop ride using the Sky Mountain Park trails or Government trail. This trail offers beautiful views of Mt. Daley along with chances to see horses and herds of elk along the way.

East of Aspen Trail to the North Star Nature Preserve

The East of Aspen Trail is a popular trail that follows the Roaring Fork River from town. Take this trail towards Independence Pass about two miles to the North Star Nature Preserve. Check out the local wildlife at the wildlife viewing stand and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the preserve.

Castle Creek Rd to Ashcroft

This fun ride is a 12-mile journey from Aspen’s roundabout up Castle Creek Rd to Ashcroft. This sleepy ghost town features the restored remains of several historical buildings including a saloon, post office, and hotel. Docents (during open hours) and interpretive signage tell the stories of this once booming town.
